Empower’s dashboard is free because it feeds a wealth-management sales funnel. If you just want to track your portfolio, without linking bank accounts, without US-only limits and without upsell calls, this is the tracker for you.
We compare honestly. These are its real strengths, with the trade-off attached.
🆓
A free, full dashboard
Net worth, cash flow, holdings and retirement projections at no charge. The catch is the business model behind it: the dashboard exists to source advisory clients. Our free tier has no funnel behind it; Premium is optional and self-serve.
🏦
Automatic aggregation
Link your US banks and brokers once and balances flow in automatically, for as long as the connections hold. The price of that convenience is handing over account access and living with sync breakage. We took the other path: a few minutes of setup, then nothing to break and nothing shared.
📈
US retirement planning
The retirement planner and fee analyzer are well regarded for US accounts. If your financial life crosses a border, though, they stop working. Our goals, FIRE and retirement tools are currency-agnostic and work anywhere.
Why people switch
The reasons people leave Empower
All of these come from public reviews and Empower’s own published policies.
📵
The advisory phone calls
Link enough assets and the wealth-management outreach starts, a persistent complaint from users who only wanted the dashboard. We have no advisory arm and nothing to sell you by phone.
🌍
US-only by design
Empower cannot link international accounts and works in USD only. MyFinanceTools is built for multi-country lives: 27 currencies, any broker or bank in the world.
🔒
Handing over credentials
Aggregation means granting access to your bank and broker logins. Here, nothing connects to your accounts. Manual entry and CSV import keep your credentials yours.
💱
Sync breakage
Account-linking issues are common enough that Empower maintains a standing "known issues" support section. Manual tracking has no sync to break.
📊
Analysis beyond aggregation
ETF overlap detection, look-through X-ray, dividend analysis and fee-impact projections: portfolio analysis, not just account totals.
🗣️
Five languages
English, German, Spanish, French and Portuguese, with localized number formats and currencies. Empower is English only.
Switching
Move off Empower in four steps
Empower exports transactions to CSV; positions are quick to re-enter.
1
Export your Empower data
In the Empower web app, export your transactions to CSV (Transactions, then the CSV button). Note down your current holdings and balances per account.
2
Create a free account
An email address and a password. No card, no bank login, under a minute.
3
Add accounts and import
Create an account per broker or bank, then import transactions or balances from CSV, or add current positions by ticker search.
4
Track on your terms
Automatic prices, multi-currency totals and snapshot history, with no linked credentials and no follow-up calls.
Pricing
Free tracker, honest upgrade
The core tracker is free forever, with no advisory cross-sell behind it. Premium adds daily snapshots, unlimited history, dividend analysis, ETF overlap and the AI advisor for $6/month, $60/year, or $249 once. Comparing other trackers? See the free portfolio tracker overview, or how we compare to Sharesight, Portfolio Performance and Snowball Analytics.
Is MyFinanceTools a good alternative to Empower (Personal Capital)?+
Yes, if what you want is the dashboard idea (net worth, holdings, retirement progress) without the strings: no bank linking, no US-only restriction, no advisory sales calls, and five languages. The one thing we deliberately do not replicate is automatic account aggregation; if that convenience outweighs the calls and the credential-sharing for you, Empower still delivers it.
Did Empower shut down the free Personal Capital dashboard?+
No. Personal Capital was acquired by Empower and rebranded, but the Personal Dashboard is still free and maintained. People look for alternatives mainly because of the advisory outreach, sync issues, credential-sharing concerns, or because they live outside the US.
Does MyFinanceTools link to my bank like Empower does?+
No, by design. There is no account aggregation: you add holdings manually or import CSV/Excel files. That means a little more setup than Empower’s automatic sync, and in exchange no institution credentials are ever shared, nothing breaks when a bank changes its login flow, and it works with any bank or broker worldwide.
I’m not in the US. Can I use it?+
Yes, and that is one of the biggest differences: Empower cannot link international accounts and reports in USD only. MyFinanceTools supports 27 currencies with daily exchange rates, localized pensions (Pillar 3a, PER, Riester, PGBL), and runs in five languages.
Will anyone call me about wealth management?+
No. There is no advisory business here. The product is funded by an optional self-serve Premium tier ($6/month, $60/year or $249 lifetime), not by asset-management fees, so there is no incentive to call you.
Can I import my Empower data?+
Partially. Empower exports transactions to CSV from its web app, which you can import. There is no documented bulk export of holdings with cost basis, so plan to re-enter current positions; with ticker search this takes minutes for a typical portfolio.
Does it have a retirement planner?+
It has goals with progress tracking plus free retirement, FIRE, Coast FIRE and Monte Carlo calculators, a modular approach that works in any currency rather than a single US-centric planner. Fee analysis is covered by the fee-impact view on Premium.
Can I try it without creating an account?+
Yes. The public demo portfolio shows the full tracker with realistic sample data. No signup, no email, no linked accounts.
