Calculator or tracker?

Why a FIRE calculator is not enough

Both answer “when can I stop working?”. Only one keeps answering.

🧮

The FIRE calculator

Ideal for a first answer and for what-ifs. But the date is only as good as the balances you typed, it stays the same until you come back and type them again, and pensions are usually left out.

📡

The FI tracker

Reads your pension, investment and crypto balances from your accounts and your saving from your savings plans. Every snapshot moves the date, so you see whether you are ahead of plan or slipping without retyping anything.

What it tracks

Everything behind your FI date

One number to aim for, one date to watch, and the reasons they move.

🎯

Your FI number

Your yearly spending divided by your withdrawal rate. Change either and the number follows.

📅

Your FI date

The year your invested balance reaches the FI number, from today’s balances, your monthly saving and your expected return.

📈

Progress over time

Snapshots record your accounts, so the progress bar moves month by month instead of being worked out once.

🔀

Your crossover year

The year your portfolio’s growth covers your spending: the point where work becomes optional.

🏛️

Pensions counted

For Switzerland, Germany, United Kingdom, United States, Spain, France, Portugal, Italy, and Canada, the retirement plan adds your state and workplace pensions and the tax on every payout.

🎲

A chance, not a promise

The plan runs your retirement through up to 1,000 market paths and says how often the money lasts. Premium shows what would make it safe.

Premium

Go deeper with your retirement plan

The tracker, the plan and its headline chance of success are free. Premium adds the full Monte Carlo (the range of outcomes, the worst 10% of markets, every start year since 1928), what makes the plan safe, scenarios side by side, your plan week by week and a PDF. Prefer to try the numbers first? Start with the FI calculator, the Coast FIRE calculator or the crossover calculator.

Frequently asked questions

What is a financial independence tracker?+

A tracker that works out your FI number and FI date from your real balances instead of numbers you type once. Each new snapshot of your accounts updates your progress, so the date moves as you save and as markets move.

How is my FI date calculated?+

Your FI number is your yearly spending divided by your withdrawal rate (4% unless you change it). The FI date is the year your pension, investment and crypto balances, growing at your expected return with your monthly saving added, reach that number. You can also count cash, real estate or alternative assets.

Does it count my pension?+

The FI number on the dashboard leaves state and workplace pension income out, so it errs on the safe side. The retirement plan adds them for Switzerland, Germany, United Kingdom, United States, Spain, France, Portugal, Italy, and Canada: it reads your pension accounts, works out the benefits and taxes each payout.

Do I need to connect my bank?+

No. Nothing is connected: you enter balances by hand or import a CSV from your broker, and you can export everything again at any time.

Is it free?+

Yes. The tracker, the FI number and date, the crossover year and the retirement plan with its headline chance of success are free. Premium adds the full Monte Carlo, what makes the plan safe, scenarios, your plan’s weekly history and a PDF.

How is this different from a FIRE calculator?+

A calculator answers once from the numbers you give it, which is ideal for what-ifs. The tracker keeps answering from your actual accounts. The FI, Coast FIRE, crossover and Monte Carlo calculators hand their figures to your plan in one click, so you can start with one and carry on with the other.
