Screens that work

How to find dividend stocks, value plays and compounders

Three classic screens, each built from filters the screener actually has.

💰

The income screen

Set dividend yield to 3% or more, then add ROE of 12% or more so the payout is backed by a profitable business. Sort by yield and you have a quality income shortlist instead of a yield-trap lottery.

💎

The value screen

Cap P/E at 15 and P/B at 2, then require positive EPS growth to filter out businesses that are cheap because they are shrinking. The classic value setup, built in about twenty seconds.

🚀

The compounder screen

Require revenue growth and EPS growth above 10% with ROE above 15%. You get businesses that are growing and turning that growth into shareholder returns, sortable by whichever metric you trust most.

Why not a spreadsheet?

Stock screener vs maintaining your own watchlist spreadsheet

The manual alternative is a spreadsheet of tickers and pasted ratios. Here is how that goes.

📄

The spreadsheet

You collect tickers by hand, paste in P/E and yield figures that start aging immediately, and re-check every number each earnings season. The universe is only as wide as your patience, and stale data quietly skews every comparison.

The screener

The full S&P 500 is already loaded with prices refreshed hourly through the trading day and fundamentals refreshed weekly. You describe what you want in filters and the shortlist assembles itself, identical for everyone you share the URL with.

Who it's for

A screen for every style

💎

Value Investors

Low P/E, low P/B, healthy ROE - the classic value screen, set up in seconds. Add dividend yield for income-tilted value.

🚀

Growth Investors

Filter by revenue growth and EPS growth YoY. Find the next compounders before they are consensus picks.

💰

Dividend Investors

Yield over 3%, ROE above 12%, reasonable valuation - find quality income, not yield traps.

🛡️

Defensive Investors

Low beta and large market cap, with profitability filters to confirm quality. Build a portfolio that sleeps at night.

Frequently asked questions

What is a stock screener?+

A stock screener is a search tool that filters the universe of publicly traded stocks by specific criteria - P/E ratio, dividend yield, growth rate and so on. Instead of evaluating hundreds of stocks manually, the screener narrows the list to the few that match your thesis.

Which stocks are covered?+

US-listed large caps at S&P 500 scale, roughly 500 companies across all eleven sectors. That covers about 80% of US market capitalization. International coverage is on the roadmap.

What filters does the screener support?+

Sector (multi-select), market cap, P/E ratio, P/B ratio, dividend yield, revenue growth, EPS growth, ROE and beta, each as a min/max range, plus free-text search by ticker or company name. Results sort by any of twelve metrics, and detail pages show further fundamentals like margins, payout ratio and debt-to-equity.

How do I screen for dividend stocks?+

Set a minimum dividend yield, for example 3%, then add quality guards: ROE of 12% or more and a P/E cap so you are not buying yield backed by a shrinking business. Sort by dividend yield to rank the shortlist. The whole setup takes under a minute and lives in the URL for next time.

How often is the data updated?+

Prices refresh hourly through the US trading day. Fundamentals refresh weekly and company profiles monthly - fundamentals only change on earnings releases, so a weekly cadence captures all real movement.

Can I share a screen with someone?+

Yes. Every filter, sort and view setting is encoded in the URL. Copy the URL and the recipient sees the exact same screen.

Is the screener free?+

The screener is available to everyone, including visitors without an account. Free users see the top 2 matches per screen along with the total number of matching stocks. Premium subscribers see up to 50 matches per screen and the full detail pages.

How many results do I see for free?+

Free visitors and free accounts see the top 2 matching stocks for any screen, plus the exact total count of matches, so you always know whether your criteria are too loose or too tight. Premium unlocks up to 50 results per screen.

Do I need an account to use it?+

No. The screener works without any signup, and you enter nothing about yourself or your portfolio to use it. Your screens are stored in the URL you build, not on a server, so bookmarking the URL is how you save a screen.

Where does the data come from?+

Fundamentals are sourced from established market data providers. We store derived metrics in our own database so the screener is fast and consistent.
