1About you
Life expectancy at 67 is about 84 for men and 87 for women in Germany; planning to 90 or later keeps a margin.
EUR
Before deductions. Each year you earn min(salary, 101,400 €) divided by the average wage of 51,944 € in Entgeltpunkte; today's salary is held flat in real terms.
Marital status
Marital status sets the tax tariff on your pensions (splitting for married couples; turn on the partner block to plan as a couple). Childless members pay 4.2 % instead of 3.6 % long-term care insurance for life; children also earn the Riester Kinderzulage and, credited to one parent, Entgeltpunkte.

Retiring before 63 keeps the statutory pension waiting until 63; from 63 on it is claimed the year you stop, with the reduction that age carries.
When to claim the statutory pensionThe pension is paid for life, so the claiming age is a bet on how long you live.

bAV: pension or lump sum?
At 67 your bAV capital is either turned into a monthly pension for life (capital times the Rentenfaktor, taxed as income, health and care contributions above the Freibetrag) or paid out once (ordinary income in that year, no Fünftelregelung for an insured vehicle, contributions spread over ten years, then part of your depot).

Over your whole plan, the capital route supports 18 € more a month for life than the pension. On the 65,786 € paid out, tax and contributions take 34,110 € at once.
Which side wins depends on the Rentenfaktor (27, that is 3.24 % of the capital a year) against the return you expect after retirement (3.5 %) over the 23 years you plan for, and on tax: the pension is fixed in euros and fully taxed every year, the capital is taxed once and then keeps growing. A longer plan or a higher Rentenfaktor favours the pension.

How to

From Entgeltpunkte to one monthly number in five steps

1
Enter your age, salary and family situation
The salary sets how many Entgeltpunkte you earn each year. Marital status sets the tax tariff on your pensions, and children decide the care insurance rate and the Riester Kinderzulage.
2
Copy your Renteninformation
The yearly letter from the Deutsche Rentenversicherung states your Entgeltpunkte so far. Enter them under the statutory pension card, then pick a claiming age between 63 and 70 and see the reduction or bonus it carries.
3
Add your company pension
Take the current capital and the yearly contributions from your provider's statement, and the Rentenfaktor from the contract. Then compare the lifelong pension with the lump sum on your own numbers.
4
Add Riester, Rürup and your depot
Riester allowances are added automatically once you contribute. The depot is drawn down evenly until your plan age; only the gain share of each sale is taxed, after the yearly Sparerpauschbetrag.
5
Set your retirement lifestyle
Enter the monthly spending you want in today's money. The page shows your Rentenlücke, what closes it, and how retiring earlier or later, saving more or claiming at a different age changes the result.

How the German pension system turns into retirement income

Entgeltpunkte
The currency of the statutory pension. Earning exactly the average wage (51,944 EUR in 2026) for one year gives one point; half the average gives half a point; salary above the Beitragsbemessungsgrenze (101,400 EUR) earns nothing more. Your points so far are on your yearly Renteninformation.
Aktueller Rentenwert
What one Entgeltpunkt pays per month: 42.52 EUR from July 2026. Points times Rentenwert times Zugangsfaktor is your gross monthly pension. The Rentenwert is raised every July roughly in line with wages, which is why the statutory pension keeps its purchasing power.
Regelaltersgrenze and Zugangsfaktor
The regular retirement age is 67 for everyone born in 1964 or later, a little lower for earlier cohorts. Claiming earlier, from 63 with 35 insurance years, costs 0.3 % per month for life (14.4 % at most); each month of deferral adds 0.5 %. With 45 insurance years the pension is unreduced from two years before the regular age.
Rentenlücke
The gap between what you want to spend in retirement and what the statutory pension pays after health and care contributions and income tax. For most employees it covers around half of the last net income, so the gap is closed, or not, by bAV, Riester, Rürup and your own savings.
KVdR: health and care contributions on pensions
Pensioners in the statutory health insurance pay half the health rate (7.3 % plus half the Zusatzbeitrag) and the full care rate (3.6 %, 4.2 % if childless) on the statutory pension. Company pensions carry the full health rate above a Freibetrag of 197.75 EUR a month; Riester and Rürup pensions carry nothing.
Taxable share (Besteuerungsanteil)
Only part of the statutory and Rürup pension is taxable, fixed by the year the pension starts: 84 % for 2026, rising by half a point a year to 100 % in 2058. bAV and Riester pensions are fully taxable. The tax itself follows the ordinary tariff with the Grundfreibetrag, so small pensions pay none.
Rentenfaktor
How a bAV, Riester or Rürup contract turns capital into a monthly pension: the euros paid per month for every 10,000 EUR of capital. A factor of 27 means 3.24 % of the capital a year. It takes about 31 years to get the capital back, which is why the lump sum often wins on paper and the pension wins on longevity.
Today's money
All figures are shown in today's purchasing power. Returns are reduced by the inflation you enter, contract pensions lose value each year because they are fixed in euros, and the statutory pension keeps pace because the Rentenwert follows wages.
Tips

Six levers that change the result most

Read your Renteninformation once a year
The letter gives your Entgeltpunkte so far and a projection at the current Rentenwert. Enter the points here and the estimate stops guessing, or enter the projected Regelaltersrente and let the simulator calibrate its points to your letter. Check the Versicherungsverlauf for missing years, which can be repaired for school and training periods.
Bridge to the Regelaltersgrenze instead of claiming early
Claiming at 63 cuts the pension by 14.4 % for the rest of your life. Financing four years from your depot and claiming at 67 keeps the full pension, and often pays off after the early eighties. The claiming block above shows your break-even age.
Pay extra contributions after 50 (Sonderzahlungen)
From 50 you can buy Entgeltpunkte to offset a later reduction, and keep them even if you retire at 67 after all. The contributions are deductible like Rürup, and the pension bought is indexed with wages for life.
Take the employer's bAV money, question the rest
The 15 % employer top-up and any full employer contribution are free money. Pure salary conversion is less clear: contributions today reduce your Entgeltpunkte, and the pension later carries full tax and full health contributions. Compare both routes with the pension-or-lump-sum block.
Use the depot for flexibility, the pensions for longevity
A depot can be drawn faster in the early years and passed on; a lifelong pension protects against living to 100. Most plans work best with both. The capital chart shows how each pot carries the years.
Each year of work counts twice
Retiring one year later adds a year of Entgeltpunkte and returns, removes a year of withdrawals and, past the Regelaltersgrenze, adds 6 % to the statutory pension. The sensitivity row above shows how strongly the monthly income reacts.
FAQ
How much statutory pension will I get?+
Your Entgeltpunkte times the aktueller Rentenwert (42.52 EUR from July 2026) times the Zugangsfaktor. Someone who earned exactly the average wage for 45 years has 45 points and receives 1,913 EUR gross a month at the Regelaltersgrenze; the average new old-age pension is well below that because few careers are that regular. Your yearly Renteninformation states your points so far, and this simulator adds the years still to come at today's salary.
What is the Rentenlücke and how do I calculate it?+
The difference between the monthly income you want in retirement and what the statutory pension pays after health and care contributions and income tax. Take your target spending in today's money, subtract the net statutory pension the simulator shows, and the rest has to come from a company pension, Riester, Rürup or your own savings. The block under the verdict shows the gap and how much of it your other pots close.
How much is deducted from the gross pension?+
Statutory health insurance takes half of 14.6 % plus half of your fund's Zusatzbeitrag (2.9 % on average in 2026), and long-term care insurance takes 3.6 %, or 4.2 % without children; together about 12.4 to 13 %. On top comes income tax on the taxable share of the pension, which starts at 84 % for pensions beginning in 2026, after the Grundfreibetrag. Company pensions carry the full health rate above a Freibetrag of 197.75 EUR a month.
Can I retire at 63?+
With at least 35 insurance years you can claim the Altersrente für langjährig Versicherte from 63, with a lifelong reduction of 0.3 % per month before your Regelaltersgrenze, 14.4 % for someone born in 1964 or later. With 45 years you can retire without reduction from two years before the Regelaltersgrenze, 65 for the 1964 cohort. Either way, the years before the pension starts are financed from your own savings, which the simulator shows as the waiting years. Until the pension starts you also insure yourself as a voluntary member of the statutory health insurance and pay the full contribution, at least about 280 EUR a month in 2026, which the simulator adds to those years.
Is the statutory pension safe until I retire?+
The pension level is fixed by law at 48 % of the average wage until 2031, and the Rentenwert has risen every year since 2011. What happens after 2031 depends on demographics and politics: contribution rates, the retirement age and the level are all under discussion. The confidence field lets you plan with only part of the statutory pension if you want a margin.
Is the bAV worth it, as a pension or as a lump sum?+
The employer's contribution is always worth taking. For your own salary conversion the picture is mixed: contributions reduce your statutory Entgeltpunkte a little, and the pension is fully taxable and carries the full health and care rate above the Freibetrag. A lump sum from a Direktversicherung, Pensionskasse or Pensionsfonds is ordinary income in one year without the Fünftelregelung (BFH X R 25/23, October 2025); only a Direktzusage or Unterstützungskasse keeps it. The contributions on a lump sum are spread over ten years. The simulator compares both on your numbers; a long life favours the pension, flexibility and inheritance favour the capital.
What happens to Riester in 2027?+
The Altersvorsorgereformgesetz closes Riester to new contracts from 2027 and introduces a new subsidised depot product. Existing contracts keep their allowances (175 EUR plus 300 EUR per child born 2008 or later) and their guarantees. The simulator models a Riester contract as capital with your contribution plus the allowances, turned into a fully taxable pension at the Rentenfaktor you enter.
How is my ETF depot taxed in retirement?+
Sales are taxed at 25 % plus Solidaritätszuschlag on the gain, after the 30 % Teilfreistellung for equity funds, so about 18.5 % of the gain, and the first 1,000 EUR of gains a year (2,000 EUR for couples) are free through the Sparerpauschbetrag. The simulator tracks your cost basis (today's depot less the unrealised gain you enter, plus everything you save from now on) and taxes only the gain share of each year's withdrawals above the allowance. The Vorabpauschale paid over the years is credited on sale, so it changes when you pay, not how much; the Vorabpauschale and Abgeltungsteuer calculators give the exact figures for a given year.
How much money do I need to retire in Germany?+
Less than 25 times your spending, because the statutory pension covers part of it for life and is indexed with wages. Take your monthly target, subtract the net statutory pension and any contract pensions, and the remaining gap times 12 times about 25 to 30 years of retirement is the capital you need. For a single person wanting 2,500 EUR a month with an average pension, that is typically a few hundred thousand euros in a depot, not millions.
Does the simulator handle couples, civil servants or the self-employed?+
Married couples can add their partner under the marital status: their statutory pension and bAV join the plan, the household is taxed with splitting on both incomes, and the partner's salary counts while they still work, taxed in the household and less their employee contributions. Civil servants (Beamte) receive a Pension instead of Entgeltpunkte and are not covered. Self-employed people without compulsory insurance can set their Entgeltpunkte to what they have and use Rürup and the depot for the rest.

We've used this for years
All amounts are in today's purchasing power: nominal returns are deflated by the inflation assumption and contributions are held constant in real terms. Statutory pension: Entgeltpunkte so far as entered from the Renteninformation, else years worked times today's points per year; future points per year = min(salary, Beitragsbemessungsgrenze 101,400 EUR) divided by the provisional Durchschnittsentgelt 2026 of 51,944 EUR, until work stops. Gross monthly pension = points times Zugangsfaktor times aktueller Rentenwert (42.52 EUR from 1 July 2026) times Rentenartfaktor 1.0. Regelaltersgrenze by birth year (65 up to 1946, plus one month per cohort to 66 for 1958, plus two months per cohort to 67 from 1964); Zugangsfaktor minus 0.3 % per month of early claiming (from 63, at most 14.4 %) and plus 0.5 % per month of deferral; with 45 insurance years no reduction from two years before the Regelaltersgrenze. The pension is indexed with wages, so it keeps its purchasing power. Health and care contributions: half of 14.6 % plus half of the Zusatzbeitrag (2.9 % default) plus 3.6 % care (4.2 % for childless members) on the statutory pension, up to the Beitragsbemessungsgrenze of 69,750 EUR; company pensions carry the full health rate on the part above the Freibetrag of 197.75 EUR a month (1/20 of the Bezugsgröße) and the care rate on the whole amount once above it; Riester and Rürup pensions carry none. Before the own statutory pension starts, an early retiree pays the full health rate plus care as a voluntary member on their contract pensions, at least on the Mindestbemessungsgrundlage of 1,318.33 EUR a month (one third of the Bezugsgröße), unless a married partner who works or draws a statutory pension covers them through the Familienversicherung (own income up to 565 EUR a month). Income tax: the taxable share of the statutory and Rürup pension is fixed by the year the pension starts (50 % for 2005, plus 2 points a year to 80 % in 2020, 81 % in 2021, 82 % in 2022, then plus 0.5 points a year from 82.5 % in 2023 to 100 % in 2058); bAV and Riester pensions are fully taxable. The engine taxes the yearly total with each stream counted at its own share, less the Werbungskosten and Sonderausgaben Pauschbeträge (102 and 36 EUR) and the deductible health and care contributions, at the 2026 §32a EStG tariff (splitting for married couples on the household's income, the partner's own pensions included when the partner block is on) plus Solidaritätszuschlag above its Freigrenze; no church tax. Contract pensions: each pot grows at its own return with its contributions (Riester with the Grundzulage of 175 EUR and the Kinderzulage of 300 EUR per child on top, in full from a Mindesteigenbeitrag of 4 % of the income less the allowances and pro rata below it) and is turned into a fixed-euro pension at retirement at capital times Rentenfaktor times 12 per 10,000 EUR. A bAV lump sum is taxed on top of the first-year pension income, at the ordinary tariff for a Direktversicherung, Pensionskasse or Pensionsfonds (no Fünftelregelung since BFH X R 25/23) and with the Fünftelregelung for a Direktzusage or Unterstützungskasse, and charged health and care contributions on 1/120 per month for ten years; the net joins the depot. Depot: the Abgeltungsteuer (25 % plus Soli, after the 30 % Teilfreistellung, 18.46 % by default) is charged on the gain share of each year's withdrawal above the Sparerpauschbetrag (1,000 EUR single, 2,000 EUR married, fixed in nominal terms); the cost basis is today's depot less the unrealised gain share you enter, plus every contribution and every net bAV lump sum, and since the basis is nominal, inflation gains are taxed as in law; withdrawals are grossed up so the spending target is met after tax. The headline income is the highest level monthly spending, in today's money, that the year-by-year run can finance to the plan age without a shortfall in any year; the run at your actual target reports the age at which the capital runs out. A married partner is simulated on the first person's age scale with their own Entgeltpunkte, claiming age and bAV; their gross salary counts while they still work, taxed in the household tariff and less the employee share of pension, unemployment, health and care contributions (about 21 % up to the Beitragsbemessungsgrenzen). Not modelled: civil servants' pensions, Grundrente, child-raising periods beyond the optional credit, Vorabpauschale credits (a timing effect on the same tax), the 30 % Riester lump sum, private health insurance, the Vorsorgeaufwand deduction of today's contributions. Estimates only, not financial or tax advice. Signed-in users are prefilled from their profile and pension accounts; until confirmed on the profile, the gross salary is estimated as the monthly net income times 12 divided by 0.65, a rough net-to-gross factor for tax classes I and IV.
